Test Drive The 21st Century Sports Car: 2015 BMW i8
Fox Car Report’s Gary Gastelu traveled to the future with the 2015 BMW i8, and the plug-in hybrid blew him away. He even mentioned how he will have a hard time reviewing traditional cars after experiencing what the BMW i8 can do.
Gastelu described the car saying, “Imagine a vehicle with a body that looks like it was designed by aliens wrapped around a carbon fiber passenger compartment fitted with doors that open like insect wings. Now place it on top of an aluminum chassis carrying an electric motor with a 2-speed transmission in front and a turbocharged 3-cylinder gasoline engine with another electric motor and a 6-speed transmission in the rear. Stuff a 7.1 kilowatt-hour battery pack between the seats, of which there are four, and voila! A true 21st century sports car.”
BMW originally planned to send 500 i8 vehicles to the US each year, but since the demand for the i8 is so strong, BMW doubled the allocation. Even though the base price is $137,450, you’ll find that many sellers are trying to get up to $250,000 based on demand.
According to Gastelu, the Porsche 918 Spyder is the closest vehicle out there on the road, and it costs $845,000!
