Illinois Intensifies Efforts with ‘Drop it and Drive’ Campaign
Distracted driving was the root of 24 percent of the traffic accidents from last year, according to the National Safety Council Research. Also, in 2012 a total of 600 crashes were the result of drivers spending more time texting or talking on their mobile devices.
So what can the Illinois Traffic Authority do to reduce these fatalities caused by distracted driving?
Well, there is a new law in effect to catch those drivers who are persistent in their dangerous driving habits. Now the state is relying on the honest and reputable citizens of the state to discourage their fellow road partners to cut the cell phone conversations, the texting and the internet browsing until the vehicle is switched off and off the road.
The campaign is informed by research which indicates that drivers are fully aware of the dangers of distracted driving but choose to ignore these safety precautions and disobey state law. The new law came into effect last August and it was fully endorsed by Governor Pat Quinn, the executive director of Illinois Tollway, Kristi Lafleur and the Regional President for AAA Chicago, Brad Roeber.
The penalties for disobeying the law ranges from $75 for drivers caught using a hand-held mobile device to the suspension of drivers’ licenses for those who have decided to make a habit of it. But while the authorities have instituted harsher penalties for disobedient drivers, the campaign will not be effective if more citizens don’t help to spread the word and help to curb the bad road behavior.
The organizers of this Drop it and Drive Campaign encourages members of the public to dedicate an article or two to the campaign or to send public broadcast messages providing details about the campaigns. Interested members of the public are encouraged to share some of the startling statistics about the consequences of distracted driving in the state, which is available on the official Drop it And Drive Website. It is time for all of us to take a stance against this destructive phenomenon!
