BMW vs. Audi vs. Mercedes-Benz: Who Came Out on Top?
There is no denying the automotive industry is a highly competitive game. Very few automakers truly come out on top, while the rest claw at one another for incremental gains in market share. We here at Bill Jacobs BMW are proud to say one automaker that does fight its way to the top is BMW, which has a long and storied history of making some of the best luxury and sports cars in the world.
A recent comparison test conducted by Road & Track magazine in their June 2014 issue pitted the 2014 BMW 320i against the Audi A3 2.0T and Mercedes-Benz CLA250.
Yes, entry-level luxury automakers have moved down market to seize youthful socialites looking for their first foray into a luxury automobile, only BMW has been able to offer something practical yet luxurious in the same package, according to the editors at Road & Track.
Compared to the competition, BMW provided the supplest ride with the largest cabin, features that cannot be compromised in a luxury sedan—not even for price, really.
However, that’s where the BMW really differentiates itself from the Audi and Mercedes-Benz. BMW has been able to produce a vehicle—320i—that is a true sports sedan with its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, compared to the other two which are “gussied-up versions of entry-level, front-drive hatchbacks,” according to the scribes at Road & Track. The BMW 320i is its own platform that strives for excellence.
The BMW 320i is the car young people want because it shows status without being gimmicky or bland. That black, blue and white roundel on the hood means a lot more than just an emblem to many people.
To Road & Track, the Audi A3 2.0T, which came in last in the comparison, offered an unfinished overall driving experience that felt incomplete and lacking refinement. There were also issues with the transmission having difficulty selecting the proper gear along with noticeable turbo lag during acceleration. Add in over boosted steering and an uncomfortably high seating position and there is no surprise Audi carried up the rear in the competition.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA250 gains merits on its sultry looks, but isn’t the winner for obvious reasons. With larger exterior dimensions, the CLA250 has quite the cramped interior compared to the rest of the competition—not a car for young professionals. The Mercedes-Benz also suffers from a poor riding suspension, according to the editors of Road & Track.
These demerits were enough to give the BMW 320i the win in the comparison test. To schedule a 320i test drive, visit our showroom at Bill Jacobs BMW located at 2495 Aurora Avenue, Naperville, Ill. We offer a comprehensive selection of new and pre-owned BMW vehicles ready for an interested driver.
