BMW Stays Ahead of the Pack
The battle for the entry-level luxury segment is certainly intense. With Mercedes-Benz and Audi attempting to unseat the segment leader, BMW has a great deal of pressure to continue to lead the auto industry with the newest ideas and concepts.
Here at Bill Jacobs BMW, we offer a wide lineup of vehicles to meet the needs of a slew of differing customers. However, before we dive into the great offerings from BMW, let’s look at the competition and where they tend to fall short in comparison.
Mercedes-Benz dived into the entry-level luxury market with the CLA. It is a chopped down, front-wheel-drive four-door coupe that not only powers the wrong wheels, but is impractical in many ways. With a somewhat cramped backseat, and an all-wheel-drive system that only works when something goes wrong, the CLA is a poor salvo across the bow of BMW. Even its small SUV, the GLA, which is built upon the same platform, is what some critics would call impractical.
The Audi A3 is basically a re-bodied and rebadged Volkswagen Golf. Why would anyone want to pay a premium for a gussied up Golf? Even with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, 85 percent of the power is still routed through the front tires. Moreover, there is no manual transmission! This is Audi’s attempt at a sports sedan, but we feel it is a miss.
BMW has a great lineup, offering a coupe, sports sedan and small SUV for the entry-level luxury segment.
The BMW 228i is dynamic and very rewarding to drive, offering more interior space than the four-door A3 and CLA while offering more comprehensive infotainment options. It is a coupe that satisfies the emotional desire for an authentic vehicle without compromise.
The BMW 320i is the original entry-level luxury sedan. All others cars are benchmarked against the BMW 3-series. It has a slew of awards under its belt, including Car and Driver’s “10 Best” 22 years in a row. Even with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the system has a natural rear-wheel-drive bias. It also has a higher range of torque transfer than Mercedes’ 4MATIC or Audi’s Quattro system.
If you need something a little more practical, BMW offers the X1. The X1 is a sports activity vehicle with useful cargo space, uncompromised xDrive capability and BMW’s excellent driving characteristics. The X1 offers a full-sized rear hatch, properly fulfilling the needs for capability and versatility without sacrificing agility.
