BMW Speeds Up Production of 1 Series Sedan
Right now, one of the fastest growing automotive segments is the entry-level premium sedan market. This market includes such vehicles as the Audi A3 and the recently released Mercedes Benz CLA-class. Currently, BMW does offer the 2-series coupe and the 3-series sedan, but due to the size and price point of vehicles currently found in the entry-level premium sedan market, BMW has decided to speed up production on the upcoming 1 Series. Here at Bill Jacobs BMW, we can’t wait to have this new sedan sitting in our showroom!
According to Autoblog, they are expecting the BMW 1 Series to share the same front-wheel drive UKL platform that is currently used on the Mini Cooper Countryman. While the Countryman sits at 161.8-inches long with a wheelbase of 102.2-inches, expect similar numbers for the new 1 Series.
Engine and transmission for the 1 Series have not been released, but if BMW continues to pull parts out of the Mini Cooper bin, look for a selection of 1.6-liter naturally aspirated or turbocharged motors that are attached to either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.
Based on current model configurations of odd numbers for sedans and even numbers for coupes, experts are saying the 1 Series line should hold ground even though the last 1 Series was the infamous M1. However, one vehicle that doesn’t follow that pattern is the five door, front wheel drive Active Tourer that utilizes the 2 Series name.
Even though the CLA-class and the Audi A3 dominate the market today, BMW is hoping to introduce the 1 Series into the segment sometime in 2016 as a 2017 model. However, since the market is so hot, speculation has it that BMW might even try to bring it to dealers earlier.
