BMW Introduces New Carbon Fiber Wheels
Apart from its obvious weight-saving benefit, carbon fiber is increasingly becoming an all-purpose material in car manufacturing. The German-based automotive company, BMW recently made public its latest project which includes carbon fiber wheels for BMW cars within the next two years. This comes as good news for many technocrats and environmentalists who are fully aware of positive effects of less-toxic car-making materials in the industry.
As one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world, BMW stands to set a trend with the development of carbon fiber car wheels. Some automotive writers have already accredited the company for the industry-wide use of electric power in vehicles following the debut of its electric sports cars. Interestingly, DailyTech.com noted that BMW is not the first company to make wheels with carbon fiber, but it will be the first company to make its own carbon fiber wheels for its cars.
According to Auto Express, carbon fiber is an expensive material but it is a much better option than magnesium. As one automotive writer noted, carbon fiber is 30 percent lighter than aluminum and 50 percent lighter than steel, well that’s a clear guess!
A spokesman for BMW said that the company is trying to incorporate carbon fiber in more critical components of its cars. Thanks to this light-weight material, BMW’s M and i-cars are fierce competition for all the other vehicles in their categories. Less weight on the vehicle extends it performance range, therefore more carbon fiber in BMW cars would boost their already impressive performance figures.
News from the progressive automotive company indicates that carbon fiber will also form the basis of the steering wheel, propeller shaft, seat frames, IP support structures and spare wheels soon. There is no need to part ways with carbon fiber in light of the future possibilities.
It would not be surprising if BMW could introduce a car completely built from carbon fiber. There has not been any confirmed date on the release of the carbon fiber wheels, but the company expects that its customers will welcome this new type of wheel with open arms.
