BMW Insider Hints at V10 in Next Generation M5
According to a BMW insider, BMW has recently been hinting that the next generation BMW M5 may have a V10 engine. While this is currently just a rumor, we can only hope something this outrageous is true. Throw in some turbochargers and we might have one of the most powerful BMW’s ever manufactured!
While the majority of BMW models are cutting cylinders, adding turbochargers, and dropping weight to obtain better fuel economy, the rumor of a V10 engine is something for fuel junkies to smile about. Is it realistic? Probably not, but let’s take a look at the pros and cons.
For starters, currently one of the direct competitors of the BMW M5 utilizes a twin turbo V10. While the displacement of the Audi RS6’s engine is a miniscule four liter, when throwing in the turbochargers, the wagon has plenty of power to get all four wheels loose in any driving conditions.
On the other hand, another competitor, the Mercedes E63 AMG, comes with a 5.5-liter twin turbo V8 which is heavier, but offers similar numbers.
In contrast to having a V10 engine for the M5, why would BMW go backwards when they have been extremely successful with twin turbocharged V8 engines? For example, both the BMW X5 M and X6 M come standard with a 4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8 that makes 560-horsepower. In a few years, by utilizing more efficient turbochargers, higher quality internals, and more boost, this engine might be capable of producing more than 600 horsepower.
Finally, the most realistic argument for not having a V10 engine would be the international CO2 emission standards set for year 2020. While all manufacturers need to have a fleet-wide standard emission, if one vehicle is noticeably worse than others, it would upset the entire lineup and could hurt production.
During testing of various models, BMW is known for configuring multiple drivetrains per model before coming to a conclusion. Their tests always include performance, durability, drivability, and sales strategy along with market demand. While a twin turbocharged V10 is something we here at Bill Jacobs BMW dream about, it might not be very realistic at this point. We will just have to wait and see.
