BMW Enthusiasts Anxiously Wait for i8
When a new BMW i8 drives by, onlookers gawk as if they just saw a Ferrari. The low-slung, two-seat supercar from BMW looks like nothing else on the road today—especially for a hybrid vehicle. The i8’s vertical-opening doors only accentuate the car’s heart-stopping looks. Here at Bill Jacobs BMW, we cannot wait to get this hybrid car of the future into our Naperville showroom.
The BMW i8 is, of course, quite different from your typical supercar. Power comes from an efficient, three-cylinder engine and an electric motor that can provide up to 112 mpg. Range can come in around 372 miles, depending on how efficiently the i8 is driven. The gas engine produces 228 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque and is routed to the rear axle through a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor produces 129 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor powers the front wheels through a two-speed gearbox.
While BMW has a history of being the go-to enthusiast brand for well over 40 years, even the i8 plug-in hybrid continues to deliver the BMW performance culture. BMW has realized that the future won’t be all about high-performance sports cars and endless gallons of gasoline.
The BMW i3, which debuted before the i8 and is the company’s urban city car, did receive a bit of criticism that BMW is beginning to lose its way. But any true BMW fan understands everything evolves and BMW is no exception. This new look and design is just what BMW fans are looking for, even if they don’t realize it yet.
Once you slip inside the i8, which takes some care due to the car’s vertical doors, high doorsill and low floor, you’ll notice the interior is pleasant and artistically futuristic at the same time. Even though it is a hybrid, luxury is not lost on the car. Stitched leather, premium materials and stylish paddle shifters make the interior of the i8 feel familiar and yet inviting at the same time. There is no denying that this vehicle is still 100% BMW.
EV mode powers the i8 up to 75 mph and for up to 22 miles, which is enough for a fast run to the store. If you switch out of EV mode, the i8 becomes livelier and a more dynamic driving experience. The i8’s firm suspension and stiff chassis provide a proper platform to take full advantage of any enjoyable road.
Flip the car into Sport mode and hold on. A heavy right foot will rocket the i8 from 0 to 60 in an estimated 4.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, which puts it on par with many similarly priced sports cars.
After being in development for almost 10 years, the BMW i8 is expected to go on sale later this year, with production beginning in April 2014. BMW has created a well-executed, sporty and efficient sports car and we can’t wait to make it a part of our lineup at our Naperville dealership.
