BMW Carbon-Fiber Bobsled Helps Bring Home Bronze at Olympics
Who would have thought to congratulate the world-class BMW automotive brand for US’ tremendous performance and placing at the 2014 Sochi Olympics? Well, thanks to the new car-making material on the market, the US team had something to celebrate.
As a matter of fact, the team brought home a bronze medal. So why should BMW take credit for this? Well, take a look at BMW’s latest icars and you will understand why. The carbon-fiber used to build the strong, sturdy structure of those cars was also used to build the team’s bobsled. Now that’s a smart trick right there!
Carbon-fiber has proven to be one of the most reliable and efficient car-making materials because it reduces the weight of the vehicle which ultimately improves speed and overall performance.
Now, of course credit should be given to the excellent team spirit and well-choreographed work of the bobsled team, but without a sturdy and agile cart, the US may not have secured third place.
Thanks to BMW, carbon-fiber is gradually becoming a popular item on the market.
Looking into the creation of the sled, Michael Scully who is known for his impressive racecar record and phenomenal designs took days upon days to decide which materials and what type of design would work best for the bobsled. It took 69 thorough reviews before he settled on a design.
But it didn’t stop there; Scully went carefully inspected the inside, checking all nuts and bolts to ensure the sled was fit and ready for the competition. Importantly, the designer sought to avoid the pitfalls of the previous sleds by lowering the weight of the sled to the bare minimum and attaching ballast lead sheets at the bottom for a low center of gravity.
Interestingly, all of this lovely automotive-like work was kept far away from BMW’s main headquarters in Germany since there was a team from its country competing in the Winter Olympics.
And while some will argue that this is a huge conflict of interest, the American market has been BMW’s biggest support for several decades so it wasn’t a surprise that the company decided to lend a helping hand or better yet, tool box and ingenuity to the US winter-athletes.
