BMW 9-Series Concept Heading to Beijing
BMW may be taking a step up in the market with a new, flagship luxury sedan, the BMW 9-Series concept. The 9-Series is set to be revealed at the Beijing auto show.
This concept car was designed to directly compete against the top trimmed Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It is rumored to go head-to-head with the long awaited and soon to be unveiled 2015 Mercedes-Benz S600 Maybach.
The 9-Series sedan has styling adapted from the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe shown at the 2013 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance in May, according to Automotive News Europe.
“The appeal of this collaboration with Pininfarina is that you get another, very different and special angle on facets like luxury and exclusivity,” Karim Habib, head of BMW design, said in the statement from the Gran Lusso Coupe’s original unveiling.
The 9-Series is set to be positioned alongside the Rolls-Royce Ghost in BMW’s global product lineup. BMW has been without a high end, luxury halo sedan since the 1995-2000 E389 BMW L7, which was an extra-long-wheelbase luxury sedan based on the 7-Series.
The current 7-Series has not kept up with the range topping and luxurious Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The current generation has done little to offer anything more than the 2001-2008 E65 7-Series in terms of interior space and luxury.
The rumored 9-Series sedan will ride on BMW’s new, modular platform codenamed G11. The platform will potentially be shared with the next-generation 7-Series and future Rolls-Royce vehicles.
The G11 platform is said to shave weight off the 7-Series to make it weigh closer to the 5-Series, somehow shaving several hundred pounds off the current models. The 9-Series is expected to go on sale sometime in 2016.
BMW has kept quiet on the concept telling Autoblog, “We don’t have any official news yet on anything in Beijing,” While we have to patiently wait for confirmation from the company, it is nice to see the Gran Lusso concept making some sort of public debut soon.
