2014 Holds Dramatic 5-Series Changes
There are some big changes coming to the 5-series in 2014. Right off the bat, two of the biggest changes will be the new diesel engine and standard navigation.
The diesel engine is more efficient and this also adds small front and rear styling tweaks. The diesel-powered 535d sedan’s turbocharged six-cylinder will give the 5-series 255-horsepower and 413 pounds-feet of torque. BMW says the diesel will have “substantial fuel economy gains over its gasoline-fueled counterpart,” however official EPA figures will not be released until nearer to the Beamer’s August on-sale date. The 535d’s available all-wheel drive puts it in a very unique class of diesel.
Starting in 2014, all 5 Series will include standard navigation. BMW continues to enhance its iDrive system for controlling navigation and multimedia functions. In this next year, there will be a new touchpad character-recognition feature assimilated into the spinning controller. Like a smartphone, the touchpad will identify letters as they’re spelled with your finger.
The 528’s mighty turbocharged four-cylinder and 535’s turbocharged six-cylinder gasoline engines continue on; but, beneath the 550’s hood is upgraded 445-hp V-8, increased 45 hp from 2013. The freshly found power pushes the 550i sedan from zero to 60 mph a half second faster than previous year’s models, now at 4.5 seconds. BMW’s trendy 5 Series Gran Turismo hatchback also has the 445-hp V-8 in 550 models and gains 2.1 cubic feet of luggage room (to a max 17.7 cubic feet) from an improved trunk in all models. These numbers are from preliminary information out of Germany.
On the outside, the changes to the 2014 model are restrained and comprise of marginally changed grille lines, restructured lower air intakes and an extra crease in the rear apron. However, there is a more sharply contoured back taillight. Now in comparison to the 3 Series, the 5 Series shares Luxury, Modern and M Sport “Lines” with exclusive interior and exterior trim packages for a lavish more active appearance.
